Thinking about remodeling your kitchen?  You may want to consider a design style that evokes a warm comfortable and inviting atmosphere. An ideal style to achieve this feel is French country design. The French Country décor establishes an inviting kitchen by incorporating a palette of colors to create a room reminiscent of a French country cottage. This style is warm and relaxed, while the design elements are practical.

The kitchens in old, rural France relied heavily on natural elements that helped to create a warm feel. Typically, the walls of these kitchens are covered with natural materials or colors, such as stucco, brick or wood or yellow or coral paint. Cabinets can be painted a white to brighten light-filled spaces in the kitchen or they can be left as natural wood.  You don’t want to use strong colors let the cabinets provide a light and airy feel to your kitchen.

Natural materials are an important part of the design in the French County Kitchen. Such as a stone tile, wood beams, plastered walls, real wood paneling, decorative ceramic tile or granite. Floors can be made of stone or brick and covered with wool or cotton rugs, a fireplace made of stone with a heavy beam that can serve as a mantel or granite for the counter tops.

Finish off the look of your French country room with accessories, you will find that tile, rustic urns, hand-painted European ceramics and pottery accents are used extensively. Wrought iron elements are a perfect choice, such as candlesticks, clocks and spice racks. Brass pots placed on the walls are useful and add a decorative element to the space. Place wicker baskets on the tops of cabinets and countertops or add copper pots. So fill your French country kitchen with natural and rustic elements and use every nook and cranny available as they did in the original French Country Kitchens.

The American style is simple and very clean. The woods used were walnut, pine, and maple. Textured fabrics, including leather, were used. The look is homespun and not commercial.  It blends well with the cottage look, western look, rustic or lodge look, and the Victorian style.  . It’s a very comfortable decorating style that features simple patterned fabrics, mix and match furniture with many distressed pieces.

Rustic country style is one of the most common forms of country decorating. The furniture lends itself to a lot of vintage or unfinished wood pieces that have a shabby chic appearance, with paint cracking or flaking.  Iron and leather materials are other common used in this decor style, as is wood paneling found in log cabins and white walls.  It’s common to see antique signs hung as decoration on the wall and homemade items are used as decorative accents.

French Country This decorating style has been popular as of late. French Country has the darkest and richest color palette of the Country styles. The most popular wood used was cherry, pear, chestnut, poplar, walnut, and ash. Rich earthy colors take precedence such as wine reds, grassy greens, mustard yellows, pumpkin oranges and sometimes a touch of pop with an indigo or cobalt. Dark wood furniture upholstered or not, is used throughout this style. Antique chandeliers, picture frames, lamps and other vintage decorative accents are also common.

Traditional country home décor is a warm and rustic style that creates a comfortable and welcoming space. A traditional country look is easy to achieve because it combines a variety of fabrics, colors and patterns, as well as antiques, handmade furniture. The colors used in this style of décor should focus on natural hues. Warm chocolate brown, cream and oatmeal are good starting points. These colors can then be livened up with reds, greens or blues. The best way to achieve a traditional country look is to incorporate lots of handmade items. This style of décor is perfect for the crafter who is constantly creating new accents to place around the home. Antiques are sure to capture the country home look. However, nearly any well-worn piece made of wood will achieve this purpose. Oak, mahogany, pine and walnut fit well with this décor. Scratches and dents only add to the charm. Handcrafted and hand-painted items are ideal. For upholstered furniture, select cozy and comfortable pieces.

Some ideas for a festive mantel include starting with natural greenery. While artificial greenery will last longer than fresh, there is nothing better than the smell of freshly cut greenery from the base or back of your holiday tree. Add to your greenery with theme items such as angels or a collection of snowmen. Finish with some tall candlesticks and candles of different heights.
